Wow, I was late to find this post. Thanks so much for this thoughtful post (and all the talk summaries you've linked too). Lots of good reading there. Cheers.

Hi Tamie,

Well, I can't really speak for all complementarians. But just offhand, I think I personally learnt a couple of things. These would represent my weak-spots, and areas which I need to continue thinking about:

1) That reading back up into the Trinity from the Incarnate Christ need carefulness. I'm not entirely persuaded that it's incorrect methodologically, but I do think that it's dangerous to ignore the communicatio idiomatum, and apply any incarnate actions of Christ to the second Person of the ontological trinity. Again, we're into tip-toeing around Christological nuances. So, really my point is that flippancy is to be ruled out with Trinitarian analogies.

2) I think Tim Foster's paper was good in that it reminded me about the complexities surrounding the context at Ephesus, and interpreting 1 Tim 2. So, really I think what I learnt here, is to hold my position on 1 Timothy 2 with a little more epistemic humility.

Hope that helps Tamie,
Mark

Hi Mark

I'd be heaps interested in hearing some further reflections about what you learned at CBE, particularly about the complementarian 'weak spots' or where you think complementarian hermeneutics could learn from egalitarian critiques. Would you be willing to put a few up?

Thanks!

Luke - no worries mate. I reckon there's a bunch more I could say, but I thought I'd better start studying for my exams and stop procrastinating by writing blog-posts! ;)

Thanks for the tip-off about "Christ" Appleby! I always do that when typing Chris! Hahaha.

Cheers brother,

Thanks for the roundup Mark, very gracious. I attended the previous conference of the Melbourne chapter of the CBE and found it fairly polemical with a heavy reliance on cultural reconstruction to drive the argument. The emphasis on giftedness is interesting a friend pointed that out in the comments on my blog.
