Mate, the Bav would've been excellent to read on this! You should blog it in 'laymans terms'!

I totally agree with you though bro - the stability of the 'papal system' does seem nice and easy ("seem" being the operative word), and a basic assumption of what it means to be RC can look appealing. Alas, it's not all as simple as JHN or many others would put forward. Looks neat, and is almost internally consistent, but there are gaps.

Hope you're well mate - it was really special having you at our Ordination. Sorry I couldn't chat for longer! We'll have another yarn at Graduation eh!?

Blessings Jas,
M.

I think the stability of the 'papal system' combined with a lack of theological nous about what it substantively means to be RC may have something to do with any attraction to Catholicism. Authoritative pronouncements on morality are easier to stand on than a squabbling democracy of voices. It's also easy to see how simplistic arguments regarding the (lack of final) authority of scripture and the (misused) authority of tradition may seem compelling when one refers to our misguided fallen interpretations. Fortunately, I've read The Bav on this, but that's not much help to the average person.

Hi "S", the quotes are from Jaroslav Pelikan's "The Christian Tradition: A History of the Development of Doctrine." That one is from volume #1. I don't have the page number on hand, but will look it up if you're keen....

Mr Miers! Good to hear from you bro - thanks for the Christmas card! Yep, keen to keep Christ at the center. Preaching this week, so would love your prayers!

Peace!

@dave, ooh, that's interesting! Let's see if they pick it up on the draft!
@Benny, thanks for the thoughts bro. yeah, it's a systematic project, so the Latin (especially in Garamond) works well! Re the third way, here's the thing: I'm actually going to putting Calvin near the 'new ecclesiologies' and Barth near the 'counter ecclesiologies' (though they don't represent them), in order to propose a third way! ... That's the scary bit....

Looks great Mark! Clear, succinct, and conforming to Archie's narrative arc: creating conflict, a 'quest', with a need for resolution! I have no idea about the topic, but I wonder whether the radical polarity (new vs counter ecclesiology) gives us the 'full spread' of voices out there; i.e. should you outline the middle way (reformed?) in the introduction as an alternative to be reviewed? Also, like Webster (and Barth), you use a whole pile of undefined latin terms. I'm not sure whether markers will be happy with that.

Ripper - thanks fellas! I'm glad it makes some sense (Dave, where's the split infinitive???) ....

Thanks for your late night input Jas - that's quite the achievement!
